Medical Relationship
between the White Days and Fasting during them.
Abu Thar, the venerable Companion, may Allah be pleased with him, said: “Allah’s Messenger, (PBUH), bade us to fast ‘the Three White Days’ of each month, namely the 13th, 14th, and 15th (of the lunar month).”
[Narrated by An-Nasa’i (2739)]
In fact, I quote the above Prophetic Hadith in order to show the medical relationship between it and a well-known scientific fact, namely that there is a relationship between man’s movements and activities in life and movement of the Moon round the Earth.
A research studied police files of crimes committed during the Three White Days mentioned in the above Prophetic Hadith. It was found that the number of crimes committed during those days is much greater than the number of crimes committed during the other days of the lunar month.
At the University of Miami, psychologist Arnold Lieber and his colleagues decided to test the old belief of full-moon “lunacy” which most scientists had written off as an old wives’ tale. The researchers collected data on homicide in Dade County (Miami) over a period of 15 years — 1,887 murders, to be exact. When they matched the incidence of homicide with the phases of the moon, they found, much to their surprise, that the two rose and fell together, almost infallibly, for the entire 15 years! As the full or the new moon approached, the murder rate rose sharply; it distinctly declined during the first and last quarters of the moon.
To find out whether this was just a statistical fluke, the researchers repeated the experiment using murder data from Cuyahoga County in Ohio (Cleveland). Again, the statistics showed that more murders do indeed occur at the full and new moons.
Dr. Lieber and his colleagues shouldn’t have been so surprised. An earlier report by the American Institute of Medical Climatology to the Philadelphia Police Department entitled “The Effect of the Full Moon on Human Behavior” found similar results. That report showed that the full moon marks a monthly peak in various kinds of psychotically oriented crimes such as murder, arson, dangerous driving, and kleptomania. People do seem to get a little bit crazier about that time of the month.
Crimes and violence aren’t the only things affected by the 29½ day full moon cycle. In the Journal of the Florida Medical Association, Dr. Edson J. Andrews writes that in a study of 1,000 tonsillectomies, 82 percent of postoperative bleeding crises occurred nearer the full than the new moon — despite the fact that fewer operations were performed at that time!Clearly, the full moon is a dangerous time for surgery, and the dissemination of this knowledge should result in planning operations for the new moon.
According to the research done at The Faculty of Homeopathic Medicine, Pair Mas, Kelantan, Malaysia, it is noted that "Fasting brings a wholesome physiological rest for the digestive tract and central nervous system and normalizes metabolism." Studies on Ramadan fasting were done by
Mechel Lecerf , Ahmed Adlouni, Nosreddine Gail, Abdellah Benslimane, Rachid Saile and Jean conducted in 1997 found a marked increase in high density lipoprotein cholesterol (so called good cholesterol) and a decrease in low-density lipoprotein cholesterol
(bad cholesterol) ;
Dr. Shahid Athar, also performed a series of studies on Muslims fasting during Ramadan and found that Islamic fasting was able to lower lipid levels in the body, lowering cholesterol, lowering systolic blood pressure and releasing hypertension. He also cited that all practitioners reported the psychological advantages of peace of mind and increased tranquility;
Hence the Prophetic advice of observing the Fast during those days, i.e. the 13th, 14th, and 15th of each lunar month, and his order for every Muslim to fast the month of Ramadan, is very helpful in calming down people’s feelings and reactions, particularly those who are nervous or high-strung.In addition to the great health benefits the person will get from fasting regularly Insha Allah.
In this context, we understand with today's researches & medical findings, the great wisdom of fasting, that was revealed to the Prophet(Pbuh) from the Creator who knows what harms and benefits his creation. It must be reiterated that Allah’s Messenger, Muhammad, (PBUH), does not speak out of his own personal human experience or knowledge.
Nor does he speak of (his own) desire.It is only a Revelation revealed.
Quran 53:3-4
There might indeed be a relationship between movement of the Moon round the Earth and Neuro-psychic disorders; but the influence of Islamic Fast in calming down and treatment of such disorders is indisputable.
Wishing you all a Calm, blessed & accepted fasting Insha Allah....
The white days
{Al Ayaam Al-beed}
Jareer ibn ‘Abdullaah radhiyallaahu ‘anh narrated that the Prophet sallallaahu ‘alayhi wasallam said: “Fasting three days of each month is fasting for a lifetime, and ayaam al-beed(White days) are the thirteenth, fourteenth and fifteenth.”
(Narrated by al-Nasaa’i (2420); classed as saheeh by al-Albaani in Saheeh al-Targheeb, (1040)).
Insha Allah the fasting of the white days for this month
will start on Thursday
14/8/2008
May we ask Allah Swt to accept our fasting and make us reach Ramadan.
